Have you been kind today?

When was the last time you did something nice for somebody without expecting something in return? Have you ever seen somebody in line at the grocery store with an armful of items or maybe just a gallon of milk and said, "Why don't you go ahead?" I am sure most of us have done this at one time or another. I just wanted to talk about how great being kind unconditionally is, at least it is to me. Sometimes it is the littlest of things that make people feel good. Not just the recipient but the giver. I know we are all in a hurry to get from A to B or to the next thing on our list but slowing down and thinking up Random Acts of Kindness' can really give you a sense of "goodness" in this fast paced selfish world.

I was on the receiving end of selflessness and kindness of a stranger yesterday and it reminded me that there are kind people in this world who go out of their way to help people. It made me remember how good it feels to do things for others. Bring a cup of coffee to somebody, send a box of Froot Loops to a friend in London who can't get them at their store, pay a stranger a compliment, slow down and let that person in a hurry in their lane, leave a single flower for somebody to brighten their day, the possibilities are endless. One I have always wanted to do was pay for the order behind me in the drive thru at Taco Bell, how big can their order be? It's Taco Bell for heavens sake! :)

Regardless of how big or small the act is, I challenge everyone to think of somebody other than themselves and do something nice for somebody-and expect nothing in return. That is the key, expecting nothing in return.

  1. Good blog posting. It reminded me of a poem I wrote a while back. I don't think people often realize how much a "random act of kindness" can mean. Sometime it changes everything. It's very randomness makes it even more valuable. Somehow it validates our humanity - a way of realizing we're all in it together. (The "Sylvia" referred to in the poem is the poet,Sylvia Plath)

    Sylvia's Beckoning - rev.II

    I heard Sylvia's last breath
    and she whispered,
    "Why don't you follow me,
    there's nothing for you here,
    only empty dreams."
    Feeling hollow inside,
    I considered her invitation
    Then the sun came out
    admiring its own reflection
    on pristine snow-fields.
There were mouse tracks sketched on a
    white snow slate
    as clouds moved hurriedly
    across a perfect blue sky.
A stranger drove by and smiled
offering a friendly wave and I thought -
how often people underestimate the value
    of a kindly gesture.

I turned around and went back home
    Not today Sylvia, not today.

  2. This is why I think you are so wonderful Marissa. One random act of kindess can be a small thing to us yet the world to another.
    You are a beautiful soul.

    K~
